Tourism in Luberon
Near Ansouis it is pleasant to explore the villages, castles and churches of the “ Pays d’Aigues ”: Pertuis, Cadenet, Lauris, Lourmarin, Cucuron, Vaugines, La Tour d’Aigues, Grambois, Mirabeau…
It
is the "water country" with numerous fountains and mediveal wash
houses ; go also to see the “ pond ” surrounded by two centuries
old plane trees in Cucuron, a favourite stop of cyclists and tourists.
The
film “ Manon des sources ” popularised Mirabeau, the church of
Ansouis and the Church St Barthélémy in Vaugines.
The
Luberon was a refuge of the “ Vaudois ” in the 15th and
16th century, declared heretical, they had been chased and in 1545
the Parliament of Aix organised a punitive expedition (more
than 3000 people were slaughtered, 6000 other sent to the galleys).
Since then, numerous villages have kept discreet protestant temples (notably
in Lourmarin).
We
also recommend:
-
the Luberon nord (Bonnieux, Oppède, Ménerbes, Roussillon, Gordes, etc.) ;
the pays of Sault with its fields of lavender and its sheeps ;
-
the gorges of Regalon (45 km) in the direction of Cavaillon ; in certain
places, the gorges 30 meters high are so narrow that blocks remain stuck between
both walls.
-
Fontaine de Vaucluse, Avignon (70 km).
-
Aix (25 km), the gorges of Verdon (50 km), Manosque 30 km -, Marseille (55 km).
The
beaches of the Var are accessible in one hour by highway.
